Another Batman 3 rumor have surfaced and this one is almost as crazy as the last few. Johnny Depp as the Riddler, Cher as Catwoman, and now this made up nonsense. I probably shouldn’t even dignify this with a post, but if not you’ll hear it from some gullible person a month from now.

Harry at AICN heard rumors of Christopher Nolan shooting the third Batman movie entirely in the IMAX format. You may remember he filmed select scenes for The Dark Knight using the 70mm cameras, which made the film that much more impressive on the huge theaters.

There are a number of reasons why this is probably not happening. I’ll list a few for you:

1. It doesn’t make financial sense. Warner Bros made the last movie for roughly $200 million and it earned over $1 billion worldwide. There’s no reason (other than a coolness factor) to incur the massive costs of shooting scene after scene in IMAX for a movie many people will see any way.

2. IMAX locations aren’t equipped to handle the demand. There are only about 400 IMAX screens and some of those are the Fake IMAX theaters masquerading as the giant screen experience. It makes no sense to go through all the trouble, so select audiences can be overwhelmed. It’s not cost effective for Warner Bros to front the bill for it and IMAX isn’t going to shell out the difference.

3. Logistically it’s almost impossible. An IMAX reel only holds about two and a half minutes of film, so cameras would need to constantly be switched out. Plus the weight and noise are issues, especially the latter when shooting quiet dialogue. Not to mention there aren’t many IMAX cameras even in existence yet.

4. Christopher Nolan hasn’t even signed for a third Batman (as far as we know). The director himself and all his creative team have repeated the mantra “he’s focusing on one film at a time.” Right now Nolan is still shooting and then editing Inception. I doubt he’s thought about Batman down to planning camerawork.

With all that being said, there is the marginally teeny tiny slim chance Nolan demands it and WB makes him happy. But it’s about as likely as Megan Fox playing Catwoman, another ludicrous rumor floating around.
